Three Islands Tour in Holbox

It's one of the most popular boat tours in Holbox. It usually lasts about three to three and a half hours, so it can easily be combined with an afternoon at the beach.

 The tours usually visit Bird Island, Passion Island and Yalahau, allowing you to discover different landscapes and ecosystems around the island.

 Bird Island is a protected area where landing is not allowed: bird watching is done from the boat and from the designated viewpoints.

 Yalahau is neither an island nor a cenote, but a freshwater spring. On most tours, the entrance fee is paid separately and in cash. Some operators modify one of the stops or replace it with Punta Mosquito, so it's best to confirm the itinerary when booking.

Cabo Catoche Tour from Holbox

Is the point where the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico meet, about 15 miles east of Holbox, approximately an hour's sail. It is one of the The most comprehensive excursions on the island and a favorite outside of whale shark season.

Most tours depart from the pier in the morning and last approximately six hours. They typically include:

  • Navigation to Cape Catoche.
  • Artisanal fishing with a line, generally taking about an hour.
  • Snorkeling in shallow areas, where it is possible to observe fish, corals, turtles, octopuses, lobsters and nurse sharks.
  • Disembark on virtually untouched beaches for walking and relaxing.
  • Tasting of ceviche prepared with the catch of the day.
  • When conditions permit, a tour along the Santa Paula River to observe mangroves and birds.

During the voyage it is possible to spot dolphins, sea turtles or flamingos in their natural habitat, although these encounters depend on nature.


 As a historical fact, Cabo Catoche was the site where the first Europeans landed during the expedition of Francisco Hernández de Córdoba in 1517.

Whale shark season usually takes place during the summer months, generally between May and September, with peak activity in July and August.

This activity is regulated by Mexican environmental authorities within the Yum Balam Flora and Fauna Protection Area. Sightings are only permitted with a guide.

Snorkeling is permitted with authorized boats and a limited number of daily departures from the island, in addition to a maximum passenger capacity per boat.
